Synopsis and Scope:
Beamed Energy Propulsion
(BEP) is
a revolutionary technology of the future space transportation. BEP
vehicles are driven by a power beamed from a remote, reusable, long-range
sources. While the majority of modern BEP techniques are based on lasers,
the scope of ISBEP also covers other forms of directed energy, such as microwave and x-ray radiation
and particle beams. In combination with a multitude of propulsive mechanisms: blast waves, ablation,
photon pressure, vaporization, photodesorption and alike, BEP stays on a
forefront of modern physics and engineering. BEP systems provide unique propulsive characteristics which would be impossible to
achieve by means of traditional, combustion-based engines. Vehicles
driven by BEP will be smaller, lighter, faster, and more efficient than
any currently existing means of space transportation. In addition, BEP
offers new and often unique technical solutions which are unattainable by
traditional means of propulsion. The areas of BEP potential application
includes astronautics (from terrestrial launches to interstellar missions),
aeronautics and micronautics (motion in microspace).
The Sixth International Symposium
on Beamed Energy Propulsion (ISBEP 6) is committed to carry on the mission, started
by ISBEP 1 (Huntsville,
Alabama, November 5 - 7, 2002) and continued by ISBEP
2 (Sendai, Japan, October 20 - 23, 2003),
ISBEP 3 (Troy, New York, October
11 - 14, 2004), ISBEP 4
(Nara, Japan, November 15 - 18, 2005) and
ISBEP 5 (Kona, Hawaii,
November 11-15, 2007). It will bring together organizations and
individuals interested in developing beamed-energy propulsion vehicles, engines,
schemes and concepts into space transportation systems of the future. It
will offer an exceptional opportunity for researchers in the BEP field to
present the current results of their studies.
The program of ISBEP 6 will cover ALL
aspects related to the science and technology of beamed-energy
propulsion in its various forms and applications. The list of
topics includes, but is not limited to:
» basic science and technology of laser,
microwave, x-ray and particle-beam propulsion and micropropulsion
(microthrusters);
» applications of BEP
beyond the space propulsion (hypervelocity impacts, nano-mechanics, robotic
transport, etc.);
» beamed energy for
propulsion in microspace (micronautics, BEP nano-vehicles);
» BEP mission and system
analysis;
» BEP for interstellar
missions;
» power-beamed photon
sails;
» hybrid and auxiliary
BEP systems;
» beam-propelled
aircraft;
» BEP flight
experiments;
» lasers and other
sources for BEP;
» beam generation,
guidance and propagation for propulsion;
» new BEP concepts;
» directed-energy
airspikes;
» research facilities
for BEP tests;
» economics, geography,
politics, law and history of BEP.
Each presentation must be accompanied with submission of a technical
paper (limited to 12-page format). Proceedings will be published under
Conference Series of American Institute of Physics. Proceeding format:
book, hardcover, 6x9-inch size, with CD. In addition, AIP will provide
on-line access to its proceedings for one year (free to all ISBEP

name(s), affiliation(s), affiliation address(es) and not more than 150 words of text must be

Presentations:
The duration of regular presentations is
expected no longer than 20 - 30 min including q&a (the actual time alottment
for talks will be set in the conference Program). Plenary talks will
be limited to ~ 40 - 45 min. The presentations should be prepared in
English, in MS Word Power Point format.
The presenters will have an option to give a
talk from their own laptop PC or from MS Windows compatible USB flash drive.
Note: talks on data CD must be copied to
flash drives prior to presentations. LCD projector coupled with a PC
will be used as a standard presentation setup.
Important: if your presentation
requires any non-standard projection means, such as DVD or VCR player,
overhead projector, etc. - please, notify the organizers (Claude
R. Phipps)
when you will be submitting your abstracts. We need to know about such
needs ahead of time in order to provide them. We cannot
guarantee accommodation of any non-standard projection/presentation media
needs if we are not notified in a timely manner as described above.
Note: no paper - no podium policy will be
enforced by session chairs, please, submit your papers in a timely manner.
Paper Submission:
ISBEP
6 Proceedings
will be published under AIP Conference Series by the American Institute of Physics.
Proceeding format: book, hardcover, 6x9-inch size, with CD. In addition, for those
who prefer electronic publications over traditional paper, AIP will provide
on-line access to proceedings.
Please, note: we are no longer collecting
hardcopies of your manuscripts, all papers must be submitted in pdf format
not later than November 1, 2009.
Paper page limit: 12 pages per
paper.
It is very important to follow the
instructions exactly as they are described by AIP - failure to comply with AIP
guidelines will delay the issue of the book. You can download the
instructions on preparation of your manuscript here (MS
Word 97 format or
pdf format).

Commitment Letter: You need to submit this form in case if you would like to
have color graphics reproduced in your paper in print. Without this form
all color graphics submitted by you will be printed in grey scale. Note:
color graphics reproduced in grey scale often turns ugly or partly invisible:
if you are opting out for a color print, test your color graphics prior to
submission. Please, check with AIP on the current price for color
pages (for example, $212 was the rate used for ISBEP 5 Proceedings).

Offprint/Reprint order form:
Offprints of individual papers are available for an additional charge as
described in the form. Please note that AIP cannot accept
any offprint orders once the manuscript is in production.
