SYNOPSIS
The modern history of Beamed Energy Propulsion (BEP)
started in 1972, when Dr. Arthur Kantrowitz first popularized the idea
of Laser Propulsion (LP) to orbit. BEP has evolved from a simple
vision of somehow employing a remote source to transmit energy to spacecraft
in flight, into a demonstrated propulsion technology. Progress achieved
thus far in setting ever-increasing flight altitude records suggests that
a useful payload may soon be delivered to Low-Earth-Orbit using laser propulsion.
Few advanced propulsion concepts have had successful flight demonstration.
More important, the field of laser propulsion is not limited to just Earth-to-orbit
launches, in the same way as BEP is not limited to laser propulsion.
A broad range of new applications will be opened with the advancement of
beamed energy propulsion research. The time when laser propulsion
and other BEP concepts will become mature, 'work-horse' technologies depends
entirely upon:
1) Expanding the current level of BEP research and development;
2) Establishing high-power BEP demonstration and test
facilities;
3) Uniting our forces worldwide to achieve this goal.
The First International Symposium on Beamed Energy Propulsion
is jointly sponsored by the University of
Alabama in Huntsville, NASA Marshall
Space Flight Center, NASA EPSCoR
Program, Alabama Space Grant Consortium,
American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Seoul
National University
BK-21-Mechnical
Engineering Research Division and Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute. It will bring together organizations and
individuals interested in transforming beamed-energy propulsion technology
into real space transportation systems of the future. It will offer
an exceptional opportunity for researchers in the BEP field to present
the current results of their studies.
LOCATION
The symposium will be held on the campus of the University
of Alabama in Huntsville. Huntsville
has been known as 'Rocket City' since the days of Dr. Wernher von Braun.
It is the home of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal,
and numerous aerospace corporations.
REGISTRATION
The regular registration fee for the symposium is $150
with an early registration option of $120. The deadline for early
registration is October 7, 2002. Registration fee for full time students
and retired attendees is $40. The regular registration fee covers
the registration package, the awards dinner at the Bevill
Center, coffee breaks, welcome reception and the Proceedings (AIP Conference
Series, hardcover). Click here for
registration on-line or for download of a pdf form.
HOTEL AND AIRLINE RESERVATIONS
The Organizers have arranged a block of rooms at the
Bevill
Center, the conference site, at reduced rates. Shuttle service
from/to the Huntsville International airport will be available. The
deadline for reservations is October 22nd. Symposium participants
can also book airline tickets at discounted fares from Delta Airlines,
the official airline of the symposium. Please, visit Accommodations
for further details.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Welcome Reception
A good opportunity to relax after the first day of the
symposium and to meet your colleagues in a less formal atmosphere.
The reception will be covered by the registration fee; a cash bar will
be available.
Symposium Dinner
The concluding event with a guest speaker (Prof. Arthur
Kantrowitz) and award ceremony will be held at the Bevill
Center. Additional reservations can be made for guests at registration.
Tour of US Space and Rocket Center
Tours of the US Space and Rocket Center will be available
at a nominal fee.
ABSTRACTS AND TECHNICAL PAPERS
A 100-word abstract with the title, author's name(s)
and affiliation(s) must be submitted by e-mail to Andrew
Pakhomov in the form of a direct message or as an attachment in MS
Word or Word Perfect format not later than July 31.
A technical paper (limited to 12-page format) will be
published in the Symposium Proceedings. The proposed publisher is
the American Institute of Physics. Proceeding format: book, hardcover,
6x9-inch size. Early submissions are encouraged. The deadline
for paper submission is October 5th. The general policy of "no paper
– no podium" will be enforced by session chairs. Guidelines for paper
preparation and copyright clearance and assignment form will be provided
on the web (see Submissions).
AUDIOVISUAL
An overhead projector will be available. Other
equipment, such as PC-projector, 35-mm slide projector or VHS VCR will
be available upon request. The requests must be received by October
7.
TIMING OF PRESENTATIONS
